A Kent man born and bred, with a long term love of beautiful Broadstairs, Ron Derain is an independent local man, often seen around the town on his mobility scooter, hunting out his next landscape for inspiration. He is a family man with three daughters and four grandchildren.
Ron has had a passion for art ever since Anna, his daughter can remember. He was born in 1930 and attended Sidcup School of Art from the age of 13 when V1 and V2 rockets were still being dropped on Britain. After national service and a military career as a tank commander, Ron worked at various London theatres painting scenery, and later as Property Master for various theatres including Sadler’s Wells and The Talk of The Town.
In 1975 he was diagnosed with MS and instead of this signalling the end of his artistic life, he decided to retire to Broadstairs where his art took on a new and surprisingly positive direction. Unable to use his right hand he retrained himself to work with his left hand. His approach altered and a new contemporary style emerged but still he produced remarkably detailed pieces that reflected his true understanding of colour and form. The works you see on this website were produced over time and demonstrate a strong sense of humanity and family life that he has observed in the community around him – from local people and their dogs to holiday makers with their buckets and spades. Ron turned a negative life changing event into a positive inspiration that we hope you will enjoy and come to love as we do.
Ron retired to Broadstairs in 1995 and since then, has found ample inspiration from this local area throughout all seasons. His approach is from the Impressionist tradition whereby he commits a scene, its colour and form to memory then recreates it in his own distinctive style. Whether seascape, people or animals, Ron’s work is both popular, relevant and familiar to all. If you are a new visitor to Broadstairs or a regular of this beautiful town, you will recognise scenes and events that will keep bringing you back. Now you have a chance to own a memory of Broadstairs seen through Ron’s artistic eyes.
